Day 2 - Mesa Verde - Far View

Far View wasn't to far away from the Visitor Center. There are 6 different sites to see in this one area. You could actually climb in some of them and on top of one of them. It was so neat to get up that close. Far View is an ancient farming community.

This is the Far View House. It was the first dwelling we came to and you could walk through some of the rooms. It was an open pueblo design, unlike the cliff dwellings. They also say it had a second story on it. Its not there anymore. They think this might have been used as a more public building, but of course they don't know for sure.

We went and walked through Pipe Shrine house, but only for a minute. This is where Ellie found the cute Green snake, so we didn't stay there very long.

One of the most interesting things to see was the reservoir that they had created. It was called Mummy Lake. Today it is covered with weeds etc, but you can still see the shape of it. They apparently had ditches coming into the reservoir and there is evidence that there might have been other ditches that transported water to other places. I was really surprised that they were that advanced clear back then!

This is Coyote Village. You could walk on the top of this one. Several of the kivas here were connected by tunnels. You could also see a row of mealing bins where women knelt and ground corn. Far View was very interesting to see, and we are glad we went there.

We only spent two days at the park. If we were to do any of the hiking trails, it would have been good to spend 3 days there. We had a great time and we really enjoyed seeing the ruins. It got your mind thinking about all kinds of things.

The next day we left Colorado and went to 4 corners. Jalyse really really wanted to go there. 4 Corners to come....
